| The Garland Chamber Percussion is a group of students who perform together for the betterment of themselves, the audience and the music. There are two halves to the group. The “legit” side performs for UIL Solo/Ensemble Region and State Contests (and has earned consecutive first divisions from the beginning), many GISD elementary schools (to inform students about band and the percussion section), and many other public performances throughout the year (band concerts, spring ensemble concerts, etc.). This “legit” side focuses on the traditional aspect of the percussion ensemble and includes some of the harder music for the year. The “unlegit” side would have to be the annual Chamber Percussion Show. The first show, Doomsday, was April 1, 2004. This side of the group allows them to relax and enjoy the music more, preparation through performance. Yes, this is the concert with the “mask-n-hoodie” costume. Over the years a quasi-cult following and virus-esque advertising campaign have helped the group to gain recognition from the school at large. The first concert was free and had about 100 people in attendance. The group has now moved on to selling out their shows and adding multiple nights to accommodate the crowds. Jacob Ramirez, Director “Give me the pain of discipline now as opposed to the pain of regret later.” Mr. Ramirez graduated from Baylor University in 2001 with a Bachelors Degree in Music Education. He studied percussion with Dr. Larry Vanlandingham and conducting with Michael Haithcock, Jeff Grogan and Stephen Heyde. At Garland High School Mr. Ramirez conducts the Symphonic Band, GHS Drumline and assists with the Mighty Owl Marching Band, Honors Band and Concert Band.
